Focus on Vision

FROM SEA TO SEE

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) begins with a blurring of central vision that can progress to blindness, either quickly or slowly, depending on the form of the disease. Because this eye disease is so very difficult to treat, researchers have been focusing on ways to prevent it. The latest findings point to the inclusion of fish in the diet. In fact, two recent studies found that the omega-3 fatty acids, found in such fatty fish as salmon, help stave off macular degeneration. In one study, elderly men who ate fish twice a week had a 36% lower risk of macular degeneration. In the other study, men and women who ate fish just once a week lowered the risk by 40%.

By eating a variety of foods in the right proportions, you can provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function. Research now shows that eating certain amounts of omega-3 fatty acids may reduce a person's risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness. Having routine eye exams is also critical to maintaining good vision. Please call SKOWRON EYE CARE to schedule a comprehensive eye health examination that includes screening for AMD. At Skowron Eye Care, Our mission is your vision.

P.S. One of the studies mentioned above also found that, compared with non-smokers, smoking nearly doubles a person's risk of developing macular degeneration.
